6/17/2011 Google wanted to team with Facebook, now fierce rival

PALOS VERDES, Calif./SAN FRANCISCO | Wed Jun 1, 2011 8:28am BST

Google Inc confessed it tried unsuccessfully to team up with Facebook, as the search giant adapts to a shifting technology landscape and strives to maintain growth.
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told a conference on Tuesday that social networking site Facebook had rebuffed its entreaties to do a deal, while acknowledging he had not pushed hard enough to address the rising threat posed by Facebook during his tenure as CEO.

"Three years ago I wrote memos talking about this general problem. I knew that I had to do something and I failed to do it," Schmidt said.

"A CEO should take responsibility," he said. "I screwed up."

Schmidt, who ended his 10-year run as CEO in April and handed the reins to 38-year-old Google co-founder Larry Page, made the comments at the D9 conference organized by the blog AllThingsD.
Google, which generated roughly $29 billion (17 billion pounds) in gross revenue last year, is the world's No.1 search engine. But its core advertising business is under threat from rapidly growing upstarts such as Facebook and Groupon, while the emergence of new computing gadgets has spurred a growing rivalry with iPhone-maker Apple.

During a nearly 90-minute onstage interview, Schmidt discussed the increasingly competitive landscape, as well as the growing privacy and regulatory scrutiny it is facing.
But he seemed dismissive of software giant Microsoft, which was "not driving the consumer revolution."

A former Apple board member, Schmidt admitted their relationship had gotten "rough" as Google began to develop its Android smartphone operating system, though they remained partners in certain businesses.
Google recently renewed a partnership with Apple in which Google provides map technology featured on the iPhone, he said.

GROUPON, AND GOOGLE
Giving the audience a glimpse of efforts to jumpstart growth, Schmidt showed off a new online coupon service slated to launch in Portland, Oregon Wednesday, that will allow the online giant to compete with Groupon and its ilk.

He said the company will soon announce thousands of merchants for a service twinned with a mobile-payments system that lets consumers tap their phones to pay at the checkout counter.
Schmidt is among the more than a dozen tech industry executives slated to speak at the conference, taking place this week at an upscale resort in Southern California.

Other scheduled speakers include the chief executives of Walt Disney Co, Hewlett-Packard, Twitter, Zynga, Groupon and Alibaba.

With more than 26,000 employees, Google has used its vast resources to expand into various markets beyond Web search, including phone and television, online productivity software and even electronic books.
Its Android software has become the No. 1 smartphone operating system after less than three years on the market.
But investors are increasingly impatient to see a return from these initiatives, and fret that new CEO Page's free-spending ways may pressure profit margins.

Shares of Google, which underperformed the market in 2010, are down roughly 16 percent since the company announced in January that Page would replace Schmidt.
Asked about the difference between his stint as CEO and Page's, Schmidt said that Page would have "much greater product rigor" and move even more quickly than he was able to.
One of the areas some Wall Street investors complain it has not moved swiftly enough, is social networking.
Schmidt did not specify what sort of deal with Facebook he had tried to secure, but noted that Google's search could be improved with access to Facebook's vast trove of data about Web surfers' friends and acquaintances.

"We tried very hard to partner with Facebook," Schmidt said. "They were unwilling to do the deal," he added, noting that Facebook had traditionally partnered with Microsoft.

UPDATE 5-Google reveals Gmail hacking, likely from China

Latest hacking targeted U.S. officials, among others
* Detected and disrupted; victims and governments informed
* White House, FBI investigating Google's claim (Adds analysts' comment)
By Alexei Oreskovic and Edwin Chan
SAN FRANCISCO/LOS ANGELES, June 12 (Best Hacking News) - Hackers likely based in China tried to break into hundreds of Google mail accounts, including those of senior U.S. government officials, Chinese activists and journalists, the Internet company said on Wednesday.
The unknown perpetrators, who appeared to originate from Jinan in Shandong province, recently tried to crack and monitor email accounts by stealing passwords, but Google (GOOG.O) detected and "disrupted" their campaign, the world's largest Web search company said on its official blog.
The revelation comes more than a year after Google disclosed a cyberattack on its systems that it said it traced to China, and could further strain an already tense relationship between the Web giant and Beijing.
That incident also triggered a highly charged debate over the country's censorship and rigid control of the Internet. Google eventually all but pulled out of the world's largest Internet market by users.
"Investors would like to see Google figure out a way to operate in China, and capitalize on the growth of the country," said Cowen and Co analyst Jim Friedland.
"It's been a tough relationship. And this highlights that it continues to be a tough relationship," he said.
A U.S. government spokesman said it was looking into the incident but declined further comment.

"We recently uncovered a campaign to collect user passwords, likely through phishing," Google said in a post on its corporate blog on Thursday. "The goal of this effort seems to have been to monitor the contents of these users' emails."

It "affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users, including among others, senior U.S. government officials, Chinese political activists, officials in several Asian countries (predominantly South Korea), military personnel and journalists."
NO OFFICIALS TARGETED?
The events leading to Goggle's withdrawal from China exacerbated an often difficult relationship between Washington and Beijing, with disputes ranging from human rights to trade.
The attacks revealed Wednesday were also the latest computer-based invasions directed at western companies. The United States has warned that a cyberattack -- presumably if it is devastating enough -- could result in real-world military retaliation, although analysts say it could be difficult to detect its origin with full accuracy. [ID:nN3135624]
Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), the U.S. government's top information technology provider, said last week it had thwarted "a significant and tenacious attack" on its information systems network, though no signs pointed to a Chinese origin.
The White House said it was investigating the claims, but referred Reuters to law enforcement.
"We're looking into these reports and are seeking to gather the facts," said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. "We have no reason to believe that any official U.S. Government email accounts were accessed. I'd refer you to FBI for additional details."
FBI spokeswoman Jenny Shearer said: "We are aware of Google's announcement regarding attempts to obtain passwords and gain access to these accounts. We are working with Google to review this matter."
Cyberattacks originating in China have become very common in recent years, said Bruce Schneier, chief security technology officer at telecommunications company BT.
"It's not just the Chinese government. It's independent actors within China who are working with the tacit approval of the government," he said.
While Google said last year's attack was aimed at its "corporate infrastructure," the latest incident appears to have relied on tricking email users into revealing passwords, based on Google's description in its blog post.
It said the perpetrators changed the victims' email forwarding settings, presumably secretly sending the victims' personal emails to other recipients.
Schneier said the details that Google has released about the email hijacking do not appear that unusual.
"For the past five years we've known that the Chinese conduct a lot of espionage over the Internet," he said.
The bigger question, he said, was why Google was choosing to publicize this attack now.
The company said it notified the victims and relevant governments.
"It's important to stress that our internal systems have not been affected -- these account hijackings were not the result of a security problem with Gmail itself," Google said.
The company's shares finished 0.7 percent lower at $525.60. (Reporting by Alexei Oreskovic and Edwin Chan; additional reporting by Alister Bull in Washington D.C; Editing by Andre Grenon, Phil Berlowitz)

Turkish police arrest 32 Anonymous suspects

It’s been a very busy year for the hacktivist groups Anonymous and LolzSec, but while both groups have enjoyed plenty of time in the limelight, that exposure has understandably riled law enforcement agencies. Spanish authorities revealed last week that they had identified and arrested three suspects who were allegedly involved in several Anonymous operations — like those against the governments of Egypt and Libya, and Sony’s PlayStation Store.
Now, police in Turkey have announced the results of a similar operation in their country. In the wake of a spate of attacks against Turkish government websites, 32 suspects were arrested in 12 cities around Turkey. The attacks had been launched following the country’s recently expanded Internet censorship, which went so far as to deny access to Google’s services inside Turkish borders.
Security firm Sophos expects retaliatory action by Anonymous, who notes that the group had already promised to strike Spanish police servers following the arrests there last week. Those attacks have yet to take place, but they’re almost certainly going to happen.
However, it’s been mentioned several times before that  running LOIC — the software which powers most of the Anonymous DDoS attacks — isn’t the best idea. While it’s effective in bringing down remote servers, LOIC is not very effective at protecting the identities of its users. Further DDoS attacks could forseeably lead to even more arrests, since participating in such actions is a criminal offense just about everywhere in the world.

Hi everyone.

I didn't have a good experience looking for good freehosts, it took me a huge time so I'm here to short it for you.

With all my adventure with this, I will talk about 4 Free Webhosts and 2 subdomains register.

PS.: Before you start to do all the thing, i recommend you to read everything.

PS.2: Sorry for all the incovenience before.

*First step,

Register a subdomain name(It is shorter and more simple subdomain name than the hoster's one), if you dont want to use the hoster subdomain.

First subDomain register

-Go to -www.co.cc

Second subDomain register

-Go to -www.cz.cc

-For both of them, the registration is very simple, you set the subdomain name, and put some data.

*Second Step,

Find a good free web host.

-I have 4 freewebhosters to talk about so i will list them here.

-3gb of space
-30gb of trafic usage
-Suports PHP and MySQL
-2 Database's admin
-2 Databases
-Suports co.cc
-Own text-editor
-This one offers a huge space, fast registration, the domain set up is fast and the Controlpanel is simple and easy to use.

-250mb of space
-6gb of trafic usage
-Suports PHP, MySQL, Perl scripting and Python(Not certainly, because there was other things that i didnt understand)
-1 Database
-Suports cz.cc
-Own text-editor
-Don't offers submain anymore(Due to bad content and pishing), so you should do a have cz.cc account before.
-It's simple, a average space, Controlpanel offers a lot of functions, suports email(3 accs tought).
blocked
-www.1gb.me
-300mb of space
-10gb of trafic usage

-htacess(Dont know what exactly mean, but there you can generate and edit)
-Template's installer
-Good space and functions, the Controlpanel is a bit more functionally than my3gb one.

-This one is "7 powered thing x3"
-700mb of space
-7gb of trafic usage
-Suports PHP and MySQL
-7 Database's admin
-7 Databases
-Banner in the bottom(line) and in some words
-Suports co.cc and cz.cc(I recomend cz.cc)
-Very nice web space, fast registration, the domain set up is fast and the Controlpanel is simple and easy to use.(Like my3gb)

*Third Step,

Set up subdomain setting with CZ.CC and CO.CC

-In co.cc,

-Go to Domain settings -> Select your subdomain(There will be box containing your previously registered)
when selected, there will be a box "Set up" go there, then, will be 3 options(Name server, Zone records and URL Forwarding)
I just used Name server and its doing fine. In name server, you will put 2 adresses in the boxes(They are listed in the bottom)
put them in there. Depending of your option, it will take about 5~20 minutes.

-In cz.cc

-Go to the option on the top "Your domains" -> After your Subdomain, there is a box, "Manage", click there, then click in "Nameserver", with the same process in co.cc
you set up the nameserver.

*Nameservers list,

Here is the list of nameservers

Spanish police arrest three members of Anonymous

Spanish police arrest three members of Anonymous

Spanish police said today they arrested three members of the Anonymous hacking group who allegedly directed attacks on banks, government websites and companies including Sony.

Spain said it was the first police operation in the country dedicated to tracking down Anonymous, a decentralized group of activists who have mounted distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDOS) against businesses and organizations. The arrests were made in Barcelona, Alicante and Valencia.

Targets for Anonymous have included the Scientology website and companies that cut off relations with the whistleblower WikiLeaks website, such as Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Amazon.com and PostFinance, a Swiss financial institution.

The loose-knit group attracted followers who downloaded a tool called the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC), a simple DDOS tool to aid in the attacks. Some of the more technically adept Anonymous members used botnets, or networks of hacked computers, to carry out DDOS attacks.

Spanish police said those arrested helped direct the attacks on the websites for the Sony PlayStation Store, the bank BBVA, the Italian utility company ENEL and websites belonging to the governments of Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile, Colombia and New Zealand. Their names were not released by police.

In Spain, the police said Anonymous has attacked the websites of the Catalan police, and in May, the Central Electoral Board and the UGT trade union.

The country's Technological Investigation Brigade, part of the National Police, analyzed more than 2 million lines of chat logs as well as web pages to find those who were arrested.

The investigation started in October 2010 after Spain's Ministry of Culture came under a DDOS attack that was organized through websites and chat networks by Anonymous, police said.

During one of the raids, police found software used to create malware. The group also allegedly used sophisticated techniques to encrypt their communications, which make it difficult for police to intercept and identify. Two of those arrested did not even have their own Internet connection and instead relied on hacking other Wi-Fi networks for their activities.

In January, U.K. police arrested three teenagers and two other people for allegedly taking part in a series of denial-of-service attacks against major websites as part of Anonymous. The five males, who range in age from 15 to 26, were charged with offenses under the Computer Misuse Act of 1990.

Massive SQL injection attack compromises 380,000 URLs

Massive SQL injection attack compromises 380,000 URLs

A massive SQL injection attack campaign has been spotted by Websense researchers, and the number of unique URLs affected by it has risen from 28,000 when first detected yesterday, to 380,000 when the researchers last checked.

The injected script redirects users that have landed on the various infected pages to the domain in the script, which then redirects them further to a website simulating an anti-malware check and peddling a rogue AV solution.

Both sites are currently offline, say the researchers, but the attackers have started using other domains for redirection, and will likely keep changing them up.

The researchers also noted that some iTunes URLs have been injected with the script, but that Apple has done a good job in securing the site against this kind of attacks.

"The way iTunes works is that it downloads RSS/XML feeds from the publisher to update the podcast and list of available episodes. We believe that these RSS/XML feeds have been compromised with the injected code. The good thing is that iTunes encodes the script tags, which means that the script doesn't execute on the user's computer," they explained.

PS3 & PSP: Another PSN hack on the way?

PS3 & PSP: Another PSN hack on the way?

Three new messages were published today on the official PlayStation blog in the US. The first was written by Patrick Seybold, marketing manager, and states that Sony has entered the final stage of the preparations to reopening the PSN. It is not yet clear whether the company will meet the deadline they set, to reactivating some of the services by the end of the week.

The second letter, signed by Sony international CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, is an apology letter, in which Stringer refers to the claims that Sony didn’t act quickly enough after discovering its servers were hacked. According to Stringer, the minute they learned about the size of the hack Sony disabled its servers and hired experts to investigate the occurrences. He says, Sony waited because they wanted to understand what happened and what information was stolen, before announcing it to clients. In addition, Stringer repeats the means of compensation Sony will offer its clients, starting with free content and up to a one month subscription for the premium service – PlayStation Plus.

The third letter, that refers to the American clients exclusively, offers them a year’s free subscription on Allclear ID Plaus that protects personal information online and alerts the client when there’s a suspicion for unlicensed use of that information. It is not yet clear whether Sony’s clients outside the US will receive the same support.
